"During my experience as a current club runner and post-collegiate athlete, I have dealt with many highs and lows in training, energy and overall physical health. In my nine years, I think I have been relatively lucky as far as injury is concerned, but like every other runner I found that the journey back to fitness is quite possibly the most trying experience an athlete can go through. Being a runner, it is so easy to get locked into just one mode of training and losing sight of the importance of overall physical strength and toning to prevent injury and to improve performance. Pilates was that wake-up call for me. In all my years of running at Long Beach State, I never felt as strong and resilient as when I was participating in Pilates at Viva Studios. The overall effect was an improvement in flexibility, core strength, and muscular endurance, and it didn't take more than an hour or two per week. "My name is Nate Bershtel and I am the girls cross country coach at Long Beach Polytechnic High School (Long Beach, CA).  For the past 4 seasons we have noticed a direct correlation between an athlete's flexibility (range of motion) and core strength with their risk of injury.  It is with that correlation in mind that we excitedly got a chance to work with Marilyn Koval and her Pilates instruction.  Once a week throughout both the summer (July/August) as well as the fall (September/October/November) Marilyn would work with our girls for about an hour.  She would take them through exercises and stretching routines as well as educate them about how the different parts of the body affected each other.  Marilyn's enthusiasm and calm manner became infectious and the girls took to this new mode of training immediately.  We found that not only were the number of injuries lessened this season but we saw huge improvements in times for all runners (beginners as well as returning runners).  The weekly Pilates session gave our girls an hour to concentrate on healing as well as strengthening their bodies.  We are so thankful to Marilyn and her expertise and we look forward to continuing to work with her in future seasons."
